Is ISO 9001:2026 out yet?
Last reviewed . We will update this page if UKAS changes its dates for moving across.
The short answer
Yes. ISO published ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition of the standard, on 16 September 2026. (source: ISO, ISO 9001:2026, Quality management systems, Requirements, checked ) If your organisation holds an ISO 9001:2015 certificate, it stays valid while you move across. In the UK, certification bodies have until 30 September 2029 to move all their certified customers to the new edition. (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked )
When was ISO 9001:2026 published?
ISO writes its standards through committees, and the committee responsible for ISO 9001 publishes news on its progress. These were the last steps before publication.
| Step | When |
|---|---|
| The vote on the final draft (FDIS) was set to close | 9 July 2026 |
| ISO's committee announced the final draft had been approved | 7 August 2026 |
| ISO published the new edition | 16 September 2026 |
The committee set the closing date for the vote in May (source: ISO/TC 176/SC 2, ISO 9001 revision update, 27 May 2026, checked ), and announced the approval in August (source: ISO/TC 176/SC 2, ISO 9001 revision update, 7 August 2026, checked ). ISO's own page for the standard now lists ISO 9001:2026 as published, as the sixth edition, on 16 September 2026. (source: ISO, ISO 9001:2026, Quality management systems, Requirements, checked )
In plain words, the countries that vote on ISO standards accepted the final wording, and ISO then published it. ISO now lists the 2015 edition as withdrawn, which means the new edition has replaced it as the current standard. (source: ISO, ISO 9001:2026, Quality management systems, Requirements, checked ) That does not cancel certificates to the 2015 edition, as the next section explains.
Is my ISO 9001:2015 certificate still valid?
Yes. A new edition of a standard does not cancel certificates to the old one on the day it comes out. Certified organisations are given a period to move across, and their existing certificate stays valid while they do.
A certification body is the company that audits you and issues your certificate. In the UK, UKAS approves the certification bodies and sets the period for moving across. For ISO 9001:2026, it has told certification bodies to move all their certified customers to the new edition by 30 September 2029. (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked )
ISO's committee says the move can happen at one of your regular audits, at the audit that renews your certificate, or at a separate audit held just for the move. (source: ISO/TC 176/SC 2, ISO 9001:2026 released, 28 September 2026, checked )
How long will I have to move to the new edition?
In the UK, until 30 September 2029. UKAS published its plan for ISO 9001:2026 in a technical bulletin on 16 September 2026, and revised it on 7 October 2026. (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked ) These are the dates it set.
| What has to happen | By when | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| UKAS has made all its decisions on certification bodies moving to ISO 9001:2026 | 30 September 2027 | Certification bodies |
| Certification bodies stop accepting new applications for ISO 9001:2015 | 16 March 2028 | Certification bodies |
| Every certified organisation has moved to ISO 9001:2026 | 30 September 2029 | Organisations certified to ISO 9001:2015 |
UKAS set these dates in its bulletin on ISO 9001:2026. (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked ) UKAS also asks each certification body to plan how it will move its customers across in time, so ask yours when it plans to move you.
Who decides the deadline for moving across?
In the UK, UKAS tells the certification bodies it approves when they and their customers must move to a new edition, and it does that in a technical bulletin, as it has for ISO 9001:2026. (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked ) Your certification body then works to those dates with you.
Around the world, the bodies that approve certification bodies, such as UKAS, work together through Global ACI. UKAS says its plan for ISO 9001:2026 follows Global ACI's approach and deadlines. (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked ) When we checked, the newest publications on Global ACI's home page did not include a document about moving to ISO 9001:2026. (source: Global ACI, Home page, checked for an ISO 9001:2026 transition document, checked )
What should I do now?
You can start on all of these today.
- Keep your current quality system running as normal. Your ISO 9001:2015 certificate stays valid while you move across.
- Ask your certification body when it plans to move you to ISO 9001:2026, and whether UKAS has approved it for the new edition yet.
- Work from the published text of ISO 9001:2026, not from the drafts, because changes made from the drafts may not match the final wording.
- Plan a review that compares what you do now with what the new edition asks for, and leave yourself time before your certification body's deadline.
One thing to watch for. Until UKAS has approved a certification body for ISO 9001:2026, any ISO 9001:2026 certificate that body issues must not be presented as backed by UKAS (accredited). (source: UKAS, Technical bulletin on moving to ISO 9001:2026, revision 1, 7 October 2026, checked )
